Leap Ladies Leap in 2012

As someone who is passionate about developing women, helping balance those boardrooms, 2012 for me is the year of opportunity and especially for women.

It’s been a year since Lord Davies recommended that UK listed companies in the FTSE 100 should be aiming for a minimum of 25% female board member representation by 2015 and FTSE 350 companies should be setting their own, challenging targets and expects that many will achieve a much higher figure than this minimum. It is recommended that companies should set targets for 2013 and 2015 to get talented and gifted women into the top jobs in companies across the UK.

For me the initiative from government is welcomed, what we want to see more of is initiative from women. Many will disagree with this comment but far too often and from too many women, I hear indecision, I hear caution, and I hear doubt. These will cripple opportunity and the potential of many talented and gifted women.

So today of all days show decisiveness, risk-taking and confidence towards your career. Get committed as the journey to the boardroom can be tricky, being interested isn’t enough, being committed is mandatory.

February 29th has traditional associations with good fortune and things out of the ordinary. Folklore states that Lady Luck bestows special favour on any venture, business or personal, that is initiated on this day. So take a decision today, aim for the boardroom. If and only if you need an excuse, let this leap year be YOUR Year.
